# High Dynamic Range Playback

To enable HDR playback, the device must support playback of streaming content or local HDR content recorded on the device.
This is not a new requirement on Android T, as the feature was also supported on previous releases.  For Display, there is a new libtonemap
vendor-overridable library that will be invoked during GPU composition. This new library will help overcome the differences in tone-mapping
between DPU and GPU, which become pronounced when layers are dynamically switched between DPU-HW and GPU.

Devices supporting HDR recording and editing implicitly support HDR decode and rendering. However, applications must query the system capabilities to check for HDR playback support.

HDR video decode capababilities can be checked by querying the supported profiles via
[MediaCodecInfo.CodecCapabilities#profileLevels](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/MediaCodecInfo.CodecCapabilities#profileLevels)
and ensuring the presence of the corresponding HDR profiles.

Display rendering capabilities must be queried using the [Display#getHdrCapabilities](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/Display#getHdrCapabilities%28%29) API.

The Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) standard uses a wider color gamut BT2020 and 10-bit bit-depth. HLG uses a SDR compatible transfer function which makes content compatible with older displays that cannot handle HDR.
The absense of metadata also makes content compatible with legacy encoders, decoders, and displays.

The HDR10 standard uses BT2020 colorspace and 10-bit bit-depth to represent a wider color gamut. HDR10 uses the Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) transfer function which
is superior to the HLG in that it can adapt to a scene’s average and peak light level to correctly map the range to the output display. However, this requires
metadata to be signaled from the source to the renderer and requires all components (Camera, Encoder, GPU, Decoder, Display) to consume metadata and interpret the PQ curve appropriately.

HDR10+ enhances the HDR10 standard by allowing the PQ curve to contextually adapt to the changing lunimance levels per-frame. This enables content with varying light-levels
to be tone-mapped with the appropriate range to always fit within the minimum and maximum luminance of the panel. This entails a per-frame signaling of the HDR10+ dynamic
metadata and poses challenges to the components that generate and consume such metadata. On Snapdragon, we have optimized our solution to provide the best playback and
rendering experience within the power budgets.

### DolbyVision[](https://docs.qualcomm.com/doc/80-56386-10/topic/hdr_playback.html#dolbyvision)

DolbyVision is a proprietary HDR technology that is similar to the HDR10+ standard. The technology uses a base layer codec that is AVC or HEVC and employs one of the HLG,
PQ, or proprietary OETF based on the profile. Dolby encoders also generate a per-frame private metadata that is embedded in the Dolby streams and consumed by the Dolby renderer
to provide scene level light and contrast adaptation.

Snapdragon devices support DolbyVision subject to OEM licensing.

Applications must detect the presence of a DolbyVision decoder using
[MediaCodecList#findDecoderForFormat](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/MediaCodecList#findDecoderForFormat%28android.media.MediaFormat%29) by providing
MediaFormat containing [KEY_MIME](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/MediaFormat#KEY_MIME) set to
[MIMETYPE_VIDEO_DOLBY_VISION](https://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/MediaFormat#MIMETYPE_VIDEO_DOLBY_VISION).

Applications must query the display capabilities and check for DOLBY\_VISION rendering support via
