# PSNPE Android Tutorial

Prerequisites

- The Qualcomm® Neural Processing SDK has been set up following the [|Qualcomm(R)| Neural Processing SDK Setup](https://docs.qualcomm.com/doc/80-63442-10/topic/SNPE_general_setup.html).
- The [Tutorials Setup](https://docs.qualcomm.com/doc/80-63442-10/topic/tutorial_setup.html) has been completed.

Introduction

This tutorial walks through the process of integrating PSNPE [snpe-parallel-run](https://docs.qualcomm.com/doc/80-63442-10/topic/SNPE_general_tools.html#snpe-parallel-run)
Java APIs within an Android application. The PSNPE Java APIs are made available as an Android Archive (AAR)
file which application developers include as a dependency of their applications.

PSNPE Java API Overview

Once the dependency of PSNPE is added, the PSNPE classes under the **com.qualcomm.qti.psnpe**
package will be available in the application classpath. Application will firstly create an
object of PSNPE, then use that object to call validation APIs.

Most applications could follow below steps with a model in format of DLC:

1. Initialize the environment
2. Set the builder configuration list
3. Load input data
4. Execute the object with multiple runtimes
5. Process the network output

The following sections describe how to implement each step described above.

Configuring a Neural Network

The excerpt of code below shows how to set paths of native libraries and configuration file.

The configuration file should be named as “model\_configs.json” and follow below format:

Synchronous Mode

In synchronous mode, input data loading, neural network propagation and output
postprocessing are processed sequentially. The code excerpt below shows how to
load input data and propagate neural network in synchronous mode.

Output Asynchronous Mode

In output asynchronous mode, input data loading is same as

but a different Java API shown in below code excerpt is for neural network execution in output asynchronous mode.

Note that PSNPE provides the following AAR file which include necessary binaries:

- **psnpe-release.aar**: Native binaries compiled with clang using libc++ STL.
Available at $SNPE\_ROOT/lib/android/snpe-release.aar

Please set environment variable to this PSNPE\_AAR file.

To build and run this sample, include the PSNPE AAR as described above and build with the following commands, in addition, you need to refer to [model-conversion](https://docs.qualcomm.com/doc/80-63442-10/topic/SNPE_general_tools.html#model-conversion) and prepare the DLC file in advance:

**Note**:

- If building produces the error **gradle build failure due to “SDK location not found”**,
set the environment variable ANDROID\_HOME to point to your sdk location.
- Building the sample code with gradle requires Java 8.
- To run the sample APK, push DLC model, JSON file, and images with its label file into the related paths.

After the build successfully completes, the output APK can be found in the application build folder:

- $SNPE\_ROOT/examples/SNPE/android/psnpe-demo/app/build/outputs/apk/debug
