# QUP v3 operational modes

The QUP v3 supports the first-in first-out (FIFO), direct memory access (DMA), and
    generic software interface (GSI) modes.

The decision to choose the mode is taken at the driver level. Other than TrustZone (TZ)
      configuration, no manual configuration is required.

There is no separate path for I2C or SPI or UART in the QUP as they share a common QUP v3 wrapper.

Based on the use case (multi-Execution Environment (EE), single-EE, transfer size, protocol), the internal operation is different. For instance, for any use case for multi-EE (such as application processor and TZ both using SPI), the operation must go through the GSI. The GSI acts as the serial manger interface to queue up the transfers using the transfer ring elements (TRE).

2. The application processor informs the QUP (GSI).
3. The GSI processes the TRE.
4. The TRE completes the processing and sends to the GENI.
5. The serial engine processes the Rx/Tx data.
