# QUP ports (I^2^C, I3C, SPI, and UART)

The QUP is highly flexible and programmable module for supporting a wide range of serial
        interfaces (I^2^C, I3C, SPI, and UART). There are 20 QUP engines available in GPIOs
        and eight QUP engines available in Qualcomm Sensing Hub SSC\_I/Os. Each QUP has up to seven
        lanes (I/O) numbered from 0 to 6. The supported assignments are listed in the table the for
        each QUP. Only one protocol can be selected in one QUP engine at a time. For example,
        simultaneous UART and I^2^C functionality is no longer supported.

The serial interface can be configured using the following two steps:

1. **Pin configuration**: See the *QRB5165 Pin Assignment and GPIO Configuration            Spreadsheet* (80-PV086-1A) and select the QUP I/O functions on GPIOs by writing to
          TLMM\_GPIO\_CFGn [FUNC\_SEL] field. For example, if I^2^C is needed, only qup\_l0 and
          qup\_l1 should be configured on GPIOs. If a 4-wire SPI is needed, qup\_l0 to qup\_l3 should
          be configured on GPIOs.
2. **Protocol selection**: Select and configure the serial protocol engine by writing to the QUP registers.

## I^2^C and I3C

I^2^C is a 2-wire bus that can be routed to multiple devices; each line of each bus is supplemented by a 2.2 kΩ pull-up resistor.

I3C is also a 2-wire bus interface with higher performance; each line of each bus does not require any pull-up resistor.

Each QUP core can be configured to support one I^2^C interface, always using lane 1 and lane 0. Only certain QUPs or SSC\_QUPs support I3C interface.
