# Secure boot key features on QCC730

QCC730 implements secure boot (authentication) on firmware loaded from resistive random access memory (RRAM) or external flash and intended to run on M4F. Additionally,		mechanisms exist to protect the execution environments of these processors from external attackers.

	
This document describes the following secure boot key features:

	
- Two separately signed images: SBL and APP
- Hashed by SHA‑256
- Signed using RSA 2048‑bit key
- JTAG debug overrides
- Anti‑rollback

## Image signing

To sign the images, you can use a private key to generate the signature of the raw
            code that you want to use, and add this signature to the device alongside the software binary.

	
The signing process involves using Sectools provided by Qualcomm to generate a certificate for the firmware image. The generated certificate contains information such as your public key and a digest calculated over the entire firmware image along with the OEM ID and model ID burned into OTP. Sectools signs the
            certificate using your private key.

## Image authentication at secure boot

Image authentication is performed when the chip comes out of reset and executes code from the ROM. The image authentication procedure involves:

1. Validating the certificate chain embedded in the firmware image.
2. Comparing a digest of the firmware stored in a certificate embedded in the image against a digest of the firmware calculated by the ROM code.

	
Root certificates are validated by calculating a SHA‑256 hash over the certificate and comparing the digest against the corresponding hash value stored in OTP. A firmware image can run if the image authentication succeeds.

1. The system powers on and takes the QCC730 chipset out of reset.
2. PBL is executed; PBL loads and authenticates the SBL image.
3. The SBL is executed; SBL loads and authenticates the APP image.
4. APP is executed.

In the QCC730 chipset, information related to secure boot is contained in the OTP, RRAM, and flash. The following figure illustrates the		image authentication components.
